Agape (a-ga-pe):
1. an abundant,
overflowing, unconditional love

"Agape" is a Greek word that expresses the deepest form of love
one can
have for another.
This is the love that God has demonstrated
to all creation. It is sacrificial, giving everything of self for another
with no expectation of returned favor or reward.
1. God the Father demonstrates
agape: "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we
were yet sinners, Christ died
for us." (Romans 5:8)
2. God the Son demonstrates agape: "This is how we know what love
is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us." (1 John 3:16)
"Greater
love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends."
(John 15:13)
Agape love expresses an attitude rather than an emotion. The
attitude expresses itself by always acting in another's best interest.
God the Father acted in our best interest when he sent his Son, Jesus, to
be a living sacrifice for our sin. Jesus acted in our best interest when
he came down from heaven to live on earth, to die for our sins and to
conquer evil, giving us the hope and promise of eternal life with him.
We
return agape love to God by following his commands. These commands are the
basic rules of life. We must love God and love each other.
